Dog weight calculator
Compare your dog's weight with the standard range for its breed.
Check body condition, not just the number
Vets score body condition on a 9-point scale because weight alone can mislead: a muscular dog and an overweight dog can weigh the same. At home, three quick checks tell you most of what you need:
- Feel the ribs. Run your hands along the side of the chest. You should feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat, without pressing hard and without seeing them stick out.
- Look from above. You should see a waist, a narrowing behind the ribs. A straight or bulging outline can mean extra weight.
- Look from the side. The belly should tuck up between the chest and the hind legs rather than hang level or sag.
Some breeds look lean by design, and others, like bulldogs, carry a stockier build at a healthy weight. If your dog is outside the range or the checks worry you, ask your vet before changing food. Cutting calories too fast can cause problems of its own.
This tool compares a weight with the breed standard. It is not a diagnosis or veterinary advice.
